What changes when you book the space
With LCL, your cargo shares container space with other shipments. With FCL, you book exclusive use of the container, even if your goods do not fill its capacity. Maersk explains this distinction in its ocean freight guide.
Before asking for prices, confirm outer dimensions, gross weight, packaging and stackability. A total volume does not show how the packages fit together or which handling they allow.

Complete the same fields in each proposal. Where a detail is missing, record who must confirm it before booking.

Find the comparison point with current proposals
Flexport notes that the point where LCL and FCL costs are comparable varies with origin and market conditions. Use proposals for your cargo; a general cubic-metre rule does not replace that comparison.
Separate included, additional and unresolved items. Check whether both proposals cover the same port, delivery point, documents, import services and unloading. Confirm currency and validity before comparing totals.
Two scenarios to discuss the choice
Illustrative scenario A: sturdy cartons ready on the same date, with flexible receiving arrangements. The review could start with LCL and its complete operations. If the cost or conditions do not fit, request an FCL alternative.
Illustrative scenario B: growing cargo volume with packaging requiring a specific handling plan. Request an FCL assessment alongside LCL, then confirm loading, securing, delivery and equipment return. These examples do not describe completed shipments or guarantee either mode is suitable.
Check the complete schedule
Ask about cargo availability, origin receiving, planned departure, arrival and subsequent operations. Identify confirmed dates and those depending on another supplier or an outstanding requirement.
With multiple suppliers, decide whether to wait for everyone or split part of the order. Keep the scope consistent when comparing: changing the shipment’s contents also changes what you are pricing.
Record why you choose an option
Keep the final cargo sheet, accepted quote and outstanding tasks with their owners. Include access and unloading conditions at your Mexican address. If the cargo or delivery point changes, request a review before authorizing dispatch.
