Cargo insurance: what to ask before buying cover

A proposal mentioning “insurance included” still needs documents and answers. Before accepting it, ask the party offering insurance to identify the applicable policy, the declared goods and the conditions for your journey from China to Mexico.

Review the proposal with the insurer or competent adviser. Keep the accepted terms, confirmation of the insured shipment and the contact who will receive an incident notification.

Identify the proposal and the parties involved

Ask who the insurer is, who presents the offer, who is named as insured or beneficiary, and which document confirms inclusion of your shipment. Request the complete conditions and applicable amendments, together with an explanation of who can answer questions about their scope.

Ask whether the offer is an insurance policy, an extension of carrier liability or another contractual product. Take that answer to a competent adviser before comparing options with similar commercial names.

Provide a shipment description that can be checked

Prepare the product, model, quantity, condition and packaging, as well as origin, destination and planned transport. Explain whether there are used goods, returns, several suppliers or partial deliveries. Ask which details are needed to assess the proposal and how missing information should be corrected. Also identify the contact who will answer follow-up questions.

Maersk Cargo Insurance contractual terms address risk information, deductibles and certificates. These concern that product rather than every insurance policy. For your proposal, ask which details must be declared and how the accepted response is documented.

Ask where cover begins and ends

Describe the collection and delivery points and the planned stages between them. Ask how transshipment, temporary storage or changes of operator are treated. Request the conditions applicable when a leg is arranged separately or the destination changes.

Maersk explains that “all risks” does not cover every possible risk. Use that example to request the exclusions in your proposal and how your particular concerns, such as delay, moisture or the prior condition of the goods, are treated.

Organize your questions before accepting

Record the answer and its supporting document. If a verbal explanation changes what you read in the proposal, ask the responsible party to clarify the difference and supply the version that should be reviewed.

Clarify declared value and costs

Ask which valuation basis the proposal requires, which documents support it, and how the currency and included items are recorded. If the order value changes or the shipment is split, ask whether the declaration needs updating before treating the previous answer as current.

Request an explanation of the deductible, any share you bear and the insurance cost. Ask for an example using the offered terms and confirm which items that example does not include. Use the same shipment details when comparing proposals.

Have the notification contact ready

Before dispatch, request the notification contact, applicable procedure and who can act for your company. Maersk separates the initial notification from later document submission; that is its process. Obtain the instructions and deadlines for the particular policy under review.

Keep the policy or certificate, declaration and answers in a shipment file. Direct coverage and insurance administration questions to the insurer or authorized party. For a transport inquiry with MX Pacific Express, separately identify the logistics scope you need to confirm.

Prepare your next step

Share the product, packaging, weight, origin and destination. Identify any information still pending so your inquiry can be reviewed with the right scope.
