Connect each charge to its issuer, conditions, period and verified events. Coordinate delivery and any equipment return with the parties responsible for your shipment.
Identify the resource behind the charge
In its terms, Maersk distinguishes demurrage for holding a container inside the terminal, detention outside it, and storage for use of facilities. It also provides for combined demurrage and detention. These are that operator’s categories: confirm how they appear in your contract and invoice.
Keep each document’s original terminology. If two parties use different names, request an explanation of the service, equipment or space behind each amount before comparing them.
For an LCL quote, ask whether the item concerns equipment, receiving or storage of your packages. Connect each response to the contracted scope instead of automatically applying full-container conditions.
Ask what the offered free time covers
Maersk’s FAQ connects D&D with agreed free time and refers to local information for its application. Your inquiry should specify the charge covered, the equipment and the conditions.
Request the period’s start and end, day-counting method and conditions of any extension in writing. Obtain the version applying to your booking. If someone gives a figure verbally, ask which document supports it.
Use a table to review conditions and charges
Complete one row per charge, even when several amounts appear in the same proposal. This list prepares a discussion with the issuer; it does not calculate a rate.
Scroll the table sideways to see all columns.
| Review point | What to request | What to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Charge and issuer | Item name and party billing it | Identified proposal, contract or tariff |
| Equipment or space | Container, terminal or other unit concerned | Reference connecting the charge to the shipment |
| Free time | Accepted scope and conditions | Current booking-specific confirmation |
| Counting method | Start/end events and applicable calendar | Dated records of those events |
| Amount | Currency, unit, bands and included items | Breakdown and calculation basis |
| Query | Contact, documents and review procedure | Question submitted and response received |
Connect the review to planned delivery
Ask who confirms availability, outstanding releases, collection appointments and destination receiving. If equipment must be returned, identify who coordinates the location, appointment and return record.
Tell the coordinator if receiving hours change or the recipient lacks agreed handling resources. Ask how this affects the plan and which decision needs authorization. Keep the answer with the current delivery version.
Request the full basis when a charge arrives
Connect the billed reference to the shipment records. Request the dates used, the events supporting them and the condition or tariff applied. If a detail differs from your files, send the specific evidence and ask the relevant party for clarification.
Record the amount under review separately from outstanding operational tasks. Ask each owner which action should continue during the query and which conditions apply. Treat a correction as accepted only after receiving confirmation.
Prepare the scope before booking
For a logistics inquiry, share product, packaging, weight, volume, origin and destination. Add receiving conditions and ask which charges or details remain open in the proposal.
MX Pacific Express will confirm the scope it can assess. Accepted free time, rates and responsibilities belong in the shipment documents; this guide does not grant extra days or settle an invoice.
Sources and scope
Sources consulted on 26 October 2026. Checklists and examples are planning guidance prepared by MX Pacific Express. Other operators’ processes illustrate concepts; the conditions for your cargo are confirmed separately.
Prepare your next step
Share the product, packaging, weight, origin and destination. Identify any information still pending so your inquiry can be reviewed with the right scope.
